SBWMA Develops Eco-Friendly Display  (Oct 2004)

Eco-Pop Designs uses creativity and recycled materials to make collapsible education tool.

Eco-Pop Designs, a local manufacturer of recycling containers, developed the prototype, shown here at at the National Recycling Coalition conference.

While shopping for a portable information display, the SBWMA found that existing products are not environmentally friendly. So, in keeping with its mission of innovation and waste reduction, the SBWMA decided to create its own display using as much recyclable, reused and recycled-content material as possible.

The result: a recycled aluminum display exemplifying creative reuse, using bowling balls for "feet," and a hubcap to stabilize the base. Belmont, Foster City, Redwood City, San Carlos and San Mateo will each purchase a copy of the display.

Excerpt from a

New York Times -  Op-ed article

" The Bottle Bill’s 10 cent solution"

by James S. Kunen October 10, 1995

"Deposit laws do clean up the environment: Iowa has cut its litter by 38 percent. And they conserve energy: Recycling an aluminum can saves enough energy to light a 100 watt bulb for seven and a half hours. But deposit bills accomplish some things that will please conservatives far more than that. They privatize a portion of solid-waste pick-up and spawn new businesses such as Eco-Pop Designs , which markets a side walk trash (recycling) container that eliminates the need for high-wage public employees to pick up the materials. About 120 billion disposable beer and soft drink containers are sold in the United States each year. A 10 cent deposit law could generate billions of dollars for the poor."
